In 1864, the Greek Orthodox community of Kavala gained the right to build a district outside of the town fortress, and its first priority was to build a church to serve the religious needs of the faithful, the church of the Timios Prodromos (St John the Baptist), at a place that was countryside for the town-dwellers inside the fortress, as well as a shrine to the Zoodochos Pigi.
