Education and Research

Founded in Kavala in 2004, the Centre is connected to the International Hellenic University. The EMTh TRC is organised into seven departments covering Transport, Technology and Research and is comprised primarily of members of the academic faculty of the International Hellenic University as well as top academic collaborators.

Its purpose is to promote technological research, to develop technological products and applications, improve the methods and productive processes by which the needs of the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the country in general can best be preserved, to develop applications and products, support industry, etc.

The growth of fishing in Kavala created an urgent need for one of the three Fisheries Research Institutes (INALE) which operate in Greece today to be located in the Regional Unit. The INALE belongs to the Greek Agricultural Organisation “DIMITRA” (ELGO-DIMITRA), an agency that is overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Institute opened in 1995 and its research focus is on aquatic environments, such as inland and transitional waters, marine fishing, using fishing products and aquacultures, as well as on educational programmes for producers and technical staff, and programmes to promote scientific knowledge.

The MOHA Research Centre was founded in Kavala in 2006. It is a Greek private, non-profit making, non-governmental research centre under the oversight of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) of the Greek Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs.

It is housed in two unique historical monuments, the Imaret and the house of Mohammed Ali, and its purpose is to research and study the achievements of Islamic culture and Islamic civilisation.
