Each year the Municipality of Kavala, as part of the celebrations for the liberation of Kavala from the Bulgarian occupation forces during the Balkan wars (26 June 1913) holds a series of cultural events in the second fortnight of June, under the general title of “Eleftheria” (Freedom).
These events climax on 29 June with the celebrations in honour of the city’s patron saint, the Apostle Paul, which take place in the outdoor spaces of the Fortress, in Eleftherias Square and in other parts of the town. These include theatre productions, musical performances, art exhibitions, folk dances, etc. A common feature of all the above is that they give visitors the opportunity to get to know and live the local history through the artistic events that interest them.
