Clean Monday

Photo from Dimofelia’s archive

This event has been held every Clean Monday since 1984. Lasting for approximately 8 hours, it takes place each year in a different location: Kalamitsa, Halkero, Faliro Park, the park of the ancient theatre of Philippi and elsewhere.

A decisive factor in the event is the voluntary participation. Members of the cultural associations take part in the festivities by distributing the Lenten food and running cultural and creative workshops.

The purpose of this event is to revive the customs and traditions of Clean Monday (kites, traditional Lenten food, outdoor entertainment), offer workshops that appeal to families, as well as musical performances with traditional, rebetiko and folk songs, accompanied by the dance groups of the associations. The festival is aimed at all ages and attracts around 5,000 visitors each year.
