Holy Shrine – Baptistery of Saint Lydia of Thyatira

This is located on the River Zygaktis, west of ancient Philippi. According to Luke the Evangelist (Acts 6.11), who was a member of Paul’s entourage, this is where the Apostle baptised the first Greek and European Christian woman, the porphyry trader Lydia of Thyatira.

Each year on 20 May, the day of memory of the equal to the Apostles, Saint Lydia of Thyatira, after the panegyric Divine Liturgy by the Bishop, clergy and congregation, led by His Eminence the Metropolitan of Philippi, Neapolis and Thassos, go to the River Zygaktis, where adult baptisms are performed. These moments are unique and very emotional.
